Todra & Dades Gorges Trekking
Overview
Mountain trekking without the extreme altitude. That's the pitch — and the canyon landscapes here make most alpine routes look like they're trying too hard.
The Todra Gorge is one of Morocco's most dramatic natural formations: a slot canyon 300 meters deep, barely 10 meters wide at the narrows, with a cold river running along the floor and a strip of sky visible far above. You walk inside it. The walls are so close you can touch both sides simultaneously. The light changes minute by minute. Photographers who planned 20 minutes spend three hours.
The Dades Valley that follows is the slower complement — a wide valley of kasbahs and rose fields that follows the seasonal river through a landscape so theatrical it barely seems real.
How this tour is different
The gorges are on many Morocco itineraries as a single photo stop on a longer drive. We've built an entire hiking tour around them because they deserve far more:
- Full canyon trekking, not a drive-by — you walk the full length of the Todra narrows, then continue into the upper gorge where the tourist infrastructure ends and the real canyon begins
- Multi-day Dades Valley route — the full "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" from Skoura to Kelaat M'Gouna, a journey most tours reduce to a single afternoon
- Berber village route — your guide knows the families in the villages along the trail; tea stops are genuine, not scheduled
- No Toubkal altitude requirements — this is dramatic canyon hiking, not high-altitude mountaineering; good fitness is enough
Is this trip right for you?
Perfect if: You love dramatic landscape hiking (think Antelope Canyon, Bryce, Zion Narrows) and want a culturally rich route that doesn't require months of altitude training. You want big scenery with a manageable physical commitment.
Also great for: Photographers, couples, families with fit teenagers, and hikers who want their first serious Morocco trekking experience. Fitness level: good — 4–6 hours hiking daily, uneven canyon terrain, some scrambling.
Not ideal if: You want the ultimate altitude challenge — that's the Toubkal Summit Trek. Or if you want beach and ocean. The gorges are inland and dry.

Salt Lake City, UT, USAAs someone who hikes the Wasatch regularly, the Todra Gorge was something else entirely. 1,000-foot canyon walls towering above you, crystal-clear pools, and absolute silence. The guesthouses along the way served the best tagine I've ever had.

Asheville, NC, USAIf you love outdoor adventure, this is a must. The variety — from river canyons to desert rim views — is incredible. Our guide grew up in these gorges and shared stories and paths you'd never find on your own.

Solo, June 2025Didn't expect them to be as dramatic as they are. Hiking through 300-meter canyon walls is perspective-shifting. Not as intense as mountain summiting, but genuinely adventurous.

Raleigh, NC, USAThe Dades Valley 'Monkey Fingers' stopped us cold on day 1 — we'd never seen anything like it. Then Todra Gorge on day 2 was a completely different kind of dramatic. Our guide showed us trails not on any map, including a hidden pool that had the whole canyon to ourselves.

Austin, TX, USAFour days felt exactly right. The guesthouses were simple but the food was some of the best of my entire Morocco trip — tagines cooked by the families who run the place. Went solo and the guide matched my pace perfectly. Did more mileage than I expected and loved every single step.
